Provenance and watermarking overview
Signals and metadata that help people know content may be AI-generated or track origin—watermarks, C2PA-style content credentials, and disclosure norms. None are perfect alone.
What it is
Signals and metadata that help people know content may be AI-generated or track origin—watermarks, C2PA-style content credentials, and disclosure norms. None are perfect alone.
Why it matters
Deepfakes and confusion harm trust. Provenance is one layer beside policy, platform enforcement, and media literacy (Course 29).
How it works (plain)
Generators may embed invisible watermarks or attach signed metadata. Detectors estimate synthetic media. Adversaries can strip or spoof some signals—treat as helpful evidence, not courtroom magic.
Try it
Check whether your image tool offers content credentials / disclosure settings; turn them on for public posts.
Myths
- ⚠️ Myth: Watermarks solve misuse.
- ✓ Reality: They help; they don’t replace consent and law.
